Chains...Unlock to Freedom

I just finished reading the book Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson as part of my English assignment.  I could have chosen something that was shorter and easier, but there was something about this storyline that had me hooked.

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin owned slaves?  What about this...ten of the first twelve Presidents of the United States owned slaves?  These facts are what moved Laurie Halse Anderson to write Chains.

Chains is about Isabel and her sister, Ruth, and their life as slaves.  Isabel is faced with the horror of having her sister sold to another family, splitting them up.  With the help of Curzon, a young Rebel slave, Isabel gives information to a Rebel soldier before a deadly plan is embarked upon.  This information could be just what she needs to be able to free herself of the chains that are holding her prisoner.

If you are looking for a historical-fiction novel, filled with excellent description and action packed, this could be just what you need.  Even though the main character is a girl, it's a book for all ages and races.  Ask yourself, what chains are you wearing to hold you back from reaching your goals? After reading this story, you will realize that it's possible you aren't wearing as many chains as you first thought.  So let yourself go, the sky's the limit!
